30th European Championships, Sofia, Bulgaria
Junior Team Event, 14th May 2014

The British Junior squad of Notts' Ellie Downie, Catherine Lyons (Europa), Teal Grindle (Sapphire), Rhyannon Jones (Park Wrekin) and Amy Tinkler (South Durham) made history today by winning the silver medal at the team event.
The team had to wait for the final and last sub-division of the day and found themselves up against the favourite teams, Russia, Romania, France and Italy. Russia won the junior team gold with a team score of 168.262. Great Britain placed second with a 165.005 followed closely by Romania who scored 164.972.

Great Britain started off brilliantly on floor, and continued their momentum with an amazing rotation on the vault. A few mistakes on uneven bars and shakey beams, but they managed to hold on to win silver. It was the first team medal for British Gymnastics at a junior European championship.
This competition also determined individual qualifiers for all-around and event finals. The top eight individuals on each event will compete in event finals on Sunday and the top 24 all-around gymnasts will compete in all-around finals on Friday. Ellie and Catherine have both qualified for the AA finals plus Ellie will compete in the vault and bars finals on Sunday. A maximum of 2 gymnasts per country are allowed to compete in an apparatus final. Both gymnasts competed on all pieces of apparatus and qualify through to Fridays “all-around” final, Ellie scoring 54.941 to place 4th and Catherine 54.932 for 5th. Ellie was first on vault with 14.516. A powerful display by the team impressed the audience and judges.
Ellie said, “Everyone did a job for the team today. We are all so close and supported each other all the way, to hear the seniors screaming for us in the crowd and see all the GB support was amazing.”
Junior National coach Nick Ruddock tweeted "WOW! What a result! Congratulations to all the gymnasts and their personal coaches for a historic achievement!!!"
Proud mum Helen, travelled to watch her daughters' compete, " I would not have missed today for the world so happy for my Ellie & all the Team they were all amazing!"
On floor Ellie produced a powerful routine with a high difficulty routine executing superb tumbles with great confidence 13.633. Ellie moved onto her favourite apparatus, vault, executing a highly difficult vault scoring 14.8 and 14.233 and Amy Tinkler joined her with 14.666 and 13.9 the top two scores of the championships. First up on bars Ellie scored 13.600 and finally beam where she remained composed throughout with just a small step forward on her dismount to score her 12.908.

Claire Starkey, after an exhausting week already, was extremely pleased with the results and all the hard work she and Ellie had put into her training since being injured at the British. Although her focus has now turned, for the moment, to the second Downie to take to the world stage as Becky competes in the senior team event.
Huge congratulations to the team, coaches and of course all the gymnasts!
