Nomination for Ellie Downie
TEENAGER Ellie Downie won gold in the vault and silver in the team competition for Great Britain at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Utrecht, in the Netherlands earlier this year.
Her victory continues the legacy of success in her family as 21-year-old sister Becky is a double Commonwealth medallist, finished a record-breaking 12th overall in the all-round event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, when she was just 16, and recently made the final of the uneven bars at the World Championships over in Belgium.
Having won team gold and individual all-around silver at a junior international in Germany in the lead up to the Youth Olympics, to go with her national junior titles from earlier this year, Ellie looks to be progressing nicely in her own career.
And the 2016 Olympics in Rio is certainly an aim – for both Downie sisters, who train at Notts Gymnastics Academy at Rushcliffe Leisure Centre in West Bridgford under the tutelage of head coach Claire Starkey.
Next month Ellie will be jetting off to Marseilles in the south of France for an event for GB, alongside sister Becky.
