Rotherham Acro competition

Categories // Acro

On Sunday, 3rd February gymnasts from the Acro Elite squad took part in a friendly invitational competition hosted by Rotherham Acro in the Yorkshire region. The competition was held to raise money for a charitable project one of Rotherham’s gymnasts is involved in, building a sustainable water-harvesting system for a school in Africa.

Unusually for an Acro competition, there was also a team event, with the scores from five pre-nominated partnerships added together to give a team total. In order for us to have a full team, a pair from the General Gymnastics Acro groups was selected to join us, based on their previous competition scores.

2 of our gymnasts sustained injuries the weekend before the competition, and Paige was unable to compete this time. Katie stepped into the breach and learned Paige and Esther’s Grade 2 Pair routine in one session, competing with Esther in Rotherham so we still had five scores for our team total. Understandably, the routine did not score as highly as some other partnerships, but Esther and Katie put 100% effort into the preparation and on the day, and that is all that can be asked. The coaches were pleased with the team spirit and maturity shown by Paige, Katie and Esther at dealing with the last-minute disappointments and changes in partnership for this competition.

Also competing at Grade 2 Pairs were Shannon and Ellena. They had increased their difficulty since the last competition and worked really hard in the run-up to the competition. They performed a lovely polished routine, and finished in 4th place by the smallest of margins (only 0.03 behind the bronze medallists).

Next up were Kayley, Skye and Katie performing their balance routine in the Grade 3 Groups event. This went well, leaving them their tempo routine to compete in the afternoon. Emma, Ambyon and Ella were the last routine of the morning and impressed the judges with their quirky choreography and clean moves to win the Grade 2 Groups event, scoring more than 1 whole mark higher than the silver medallists.

In the afternoon, Rebecca and Lauren from A2 competed in the prep A Pairs event. This was a large field with a high standard, but the girls were unfazed and performed a great routine to finish 5th, only 0.3 behind the gold medallists.

The last routine of the day was Kayley, Skye and Katie’s tempo routine, and they surprised us all by over-rotating their first move and having a nasty-looking fall. The routine was stopped, but the girls were adamant they wanted to continue, so after a quick rest they got back on the floor and performed the full routine including the move that went wrong the first time, to loud applause from the audience.

The team event was won by Wakefield. All the partnerships competed well and were exemplary ambassadors for the Academy. They held their own in a region where the standard is higher than in the East Midlands, and the coaches are pleased with their performances and look forward to what they will achieve at the Regional Prelims in March.

Notts Christmas Display 2012
Sunday 16th December 2012

There cannot be many events where the youngest budding athlete can perform alongside their world class colleagues, but that was exactly what was in evidence at Sunday's 2012 Notts Gymnastics Academy Christmas Display.

The audience in the packed gym at the Rushcliffe Leisure Centre saw elite gymnasts and the some of the youngest developing talent.  Notts gymnasts Niamh Rippin, fresh from competing at the 2012 Glasgow World Cup, and Ellie Downie, junior GB team member, demonstrated their impressive vaulting skills and floor routines, whilst the youngest members of this thriving club got the chance to show their potential.  The mens artistic sense of fun shone through as the elite men performed wearing tutu's and the cheerleaders energetic and acro's precision routines wowed the crowd.

This is of course typical of the environment in which the young gymnasts train, where they able to learn from, support and encourage each other, and aspire to represent their country at what they love to do.

Head Coach of the Academy, Claire Starkey reflected, "I am very pleased the day came together so well, for over 15 years I have planned Christmas displays but non as big as this. I was worried that we might be taking on too much, but the parents, helpers and gymnasts were amazing. Everybody pulled together, everybody supported each other and I'm so excited about the future of Notts Academy, this is the start of a new chapter of harmony."

"The spirit of cooperation between gymnasts, their families and coaches was very much in evidence.  Clearly this is a thriving club which is producing some of the best young gymnasts in the country.  What was also clear from Sunday's fantastic and varied display is that there are many young gymnasts coming through the club, and the recipe for success is set to continue."
