Notts girls compete at 24th International Artistic competition in Malta

Categories // Women's artistic

The weekend of 7th-9th July saw Notts take a delegation of 16 gymnasts and 3 coaches to the 24th International Artistic competition in Malta.

After travelling on Wednesday 5th the first day was spent acclimatising to the 33 degree heat before Friday podium training which offered the opportunity to train in the new competition venue.

Podium completed with no major problems left time for lunch and shopping in the Maltese capital of Valletta before an early night in preparation for the following day's competition

Saturday and the opportunity for everyone to compete.

Round 2 and the Notts 'A' and 'B' teams were up first, competing in category 'D'.

No problems on Vault for the 'A' team but a nervous start on Beam for the 'B' team. 2nd rotation saw them move to Bars and Floor. Despite a couple of wobbles in warm up both team produced clean routines from everybody and Lara successfully competing her Giants for the first time. Rotation 3 Beam and Vault, no problems on Vault but a couple of falls from Amy and Jemimah on beam, although it still meant that there were 3 clean routines to count towards the team score. Final apparatus Floor and Bars, good solid performances on floor with all skills comfortably performed and apart from a few steps on landing all bar routines were successful with no falls.

Round 3 saw Notts 'C' team competing in category 'D'

Vault was the first apparatus and was completed successfully, Bars had a few small mistakes but everyone produced a clean routine. Unfortunately Beam proved to be the problem apparatus again with falls from everyone. Finally to Floor, no Floor and new skills competed for the first time. Violet's routine with attitude entertaining the judges and audience, bringing smiles all around.

Round 5 and the chance for Elyse and Thea to compete.

Thea recovering from an ankle injury was only competing Bars and Beam which left Elyse to compete on the starting apparatus - floor. No problem in warm up but then a slip on the straight front full resulted in a fall and a trip to the physio for ice and a massage meaning she was unable to compete Vault. Moving to Bars, only Thea was competing this piece. One touch warm up was not easy preparation but a nice tidy routine up to the toe-on toe-off when she unfortunately missed her toe on and took a fall on the apparatus. The remainder of the routine was completed as tidily as the first half. Finally to Beam and reduced routines for both due to previous injuries with Elyse. Both were tidy but Elyse fell on split jump (cross beam) which she was competing for the first time.

Overall there were a few mistakes but lots of positives with new skills competed for the first time.

A deserved Gold medal for Jemimah on Vault and Bronze on Floor, Silver for Erin on Beam. The consistency of the whole team's performance led to a 3rd place finish for the 'A' team. Excellent results considering the large field of 50 individual competitors and 29 teams in category 'D'.

Well done to all, time to relax now with the farewell BBQ and party and a trip to the beach and water park before returning home.

Coaches:   Alan Price, Sarah Middleton and Libby Sheard.
Team 'A':    Liv, Jemimah, Erin, Amy and Lara
Team 'B':    Niamh, Lori, Jojo, Amelia, Adele
Team 'C':    Nina, Violet, Bella, Lottie
